St. Paul's Episcopal Montessori School was created to nourish the mind, body, and spirit of those to whom the future belongs, children.  As part of its ongoing Speaker Series for those who care about how best to support the growth of our children, Dr. Michael Karcher, Associate Professor of Counseling and Educational Psychology at University of Texas - San Antonio, recently presented Television and Child Development: How to Do It Right.

Karcher used research from Christakis and Zimmerman's The Elephant in the Living Room to make these points:

      1.  Media is a real and powerful influence
      2.  Media should be a tool, not a crutch
      3.  Don't feel bad or guilty about using it, but use it wisely

Research has determined that baby DVD's and videos are associated with delayed language acquistion, suggesting that TV exposure should be limited in the first three years.  70% of the ads shown during children's shows are for high sugar cereals, candy bars, and junk food, being the primary link between TV watching and childhood obesity.  Karcher suggests parents discourage eating while viewing, limit advertising to which children are exposed, and promote media literacy so that children can better discern claims made in advertising.  Also, exposure to violence on television causes more aggressive behavior, even 15 years later.

Please contact the school at (210) 271-2861 or school@stpauls-satx.org to be notified of the next event in the Speaker Series.
